Autumn Term 1

For the Autumn 1 half-term we will be enjoying the topic 'Why are humans not like tigers?'

In this topic, we will be super scientists, as we will learn to identify and name a variety of common animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, describing and comparing the structure of these animals. We will also identify and name animals that are omnivores, carnivores and herbivores.

Following on from this, our children will be amazing engineers in our D&T unit on ‘Mechanisms, wheels and axels’, wherein we will design, make, test and evaluate our own moving vehicles! We can't wait for the learning to begin!

In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the stories of ‘Owl Babies’ by Martin Waddell, ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson and ‘The Tiger who came to tea@ by Judith Kerr.  The children will be creating a class story map for each story and using it to retell the story, and later embellish it, including lots of super story language! They will be writing simple sentences based on their story, ensuring they include their ‘Just Do It rules’ (being capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, Fred talk to spell) and ensuring they read and check their work makes sense! We will also be learning how to plan for our writing; breaking each story up into a beginning, middle and end.

We can't wait to see what the children achieve!

Phonics screen information

In June, all Year One children across the country will sit their National Phonics Screen. To find out more about what's involved, watch this short video:

https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/3wAZDlno/x00SzYIA

In Maths, our clever Mathematicians are learning all about:

Numbers to 10, Part-whole within 10 and Addition and subtraction within 10.

You can support your child at home by developing their understanding of numbers to 10; counting up to 10, finding one more/less than numbers to 10, recognising and writing the numbers – ensuring numbers are formed correctly – and being able to order number cards correctly. When adding and subtracting within 10, can your child write the corresponding number sentence?

You can further support your child using some great online games. Check out:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/addition/addition-to-10

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/subtraction/subtraction-to-10

At school, we offer children a range of strategies to choose from when calculating: concrete (using counters or physical items to count/subtract with), pictorial (drawing dots then adding more/taking some away by crossing them out), or abstract (using a number line and counting forwards/backwards along it, ensuring one jump per number counted).

Don't forget to log into your child's TT Rockstars account to practise their times tables too!

For the Autumn 1 half term we will be enjoying the topic ‘Why would a dinosaur not make a good pet?'

In this topic, we will be super scientists. We will classify things into living, dead or never lived and we will know how a specific habitat provides for the basic needs of things living there (plants and animals). We will also match living things to their habitat, name some different sources of food for animals, know about and explain a simple food chain.

In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the stories of ‘The Gingerbread Man’ and ‘Red Riding Hood’ by Jonathon Langley. The children will be retelling and later innovating these stories. They will also use story maps and differentiated texts to help them write these narratives. We will be learning to plan our writing, breaking it up into beginning, middle and end, as well as correctly using their just do it rules! As well as going on a journey into the world of narratives, the children will also write a non-chronological report about woodland animals, for example wolves. We can't wait to see what the children achieve!

In Maths, our clever Mathematicians are learning about numbers up to 100. They will also be developing their knowledge of addition and subtraction. The children will learn to use methods such as column addition, column subtraction, using a number line, drawing tens and ones and using dienes to help them. If you need any support with helping your child at home, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher via Class Dojo.

This half term we will also be learning to tell a story through drawing in art. The children will develop their mark making skills to create a concertina storybook.

We will also be learning about computing systems and networks – IT around us. The children will be learning about how information technology (IT) is being used for good in our lives. With an initial focus on IT in the home, learners explore how IT benefits society in places such as shops, libraries, and hospitals. Whilst discussing the responsible use of technology, and how to make smart choices when using it.

  • Do what matters most
  • Be yourself
  • Show you care
  • Succeed together

Autumn Term 1

For the Autumn 1 half term we will be enjoying the topic ‘How Far Can You Throw Your Shadow?’

In this topic, we will be super scientists. We will recognise that we need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light. We will investigate reflections and understand that light is reflected from surfaces. We will recognise that light from the sun can be dangerous and that there are ways to protect our eyes. We will understand that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by an opaque object, and we will find patterns in the way that the size of shadows can change.

In Art we will explore the use of shapes, shading and texture to enhance our drawing skills. The art unit will emphasise developing a sense of light and dark, using frottage for texture, and experimenting with different tools to create expressive and abstract art – we can’t wait to get started!

In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the key text ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’ by Jill Tomlinson.

The children will be retelling and later embellishing these stories. They will also use story maps and adapted texts to help them write these narratives. We will be learning to plan our writing, breaking it up into beginning, middle and end, as well as correctly using their 'just do it' rules! As well as going on a journey into the world of narratives, the children will also explore non-fiction texts and write a non-chronological report about nocturnal animals. We can't wait to see what the children achieve!

In Maths, our clever Mathematicians will be learning about place value within 1000. They will also be developing their knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children will use concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to solve questions and challenges, using methods efficiently to solve problems. If you need any support with helping your child at home, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher via Class Dojo.

In computing we will be learning about computing systems and networks. Children will begin to name and identify digital devices as well as being able to recognise and understand that all devices have an ‘input – process – output’ structure which is fundamental in enabling devices to work. We will also continue to learn the importance of e-safety focusing particularly on self-image, identity and online relationships.

In PE this half term, Year 3 will be focusing on developing their skills in football. They will learn the basic rules of the game and work on fundamental techniques such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and defending. Through a variety of fun and engaging activities, students will improve their coordination, teamwork, and spatial awareness. Emphasis will be placed on fair play, communication, and working together as part of a team. By the end of the unit, children will have a better understanding of how to play small-sided games and will have gained confidence in their football skills.
