Autumn Term 2

For the Autumn 2 half-term we will be enjoying the topic 'Where do we live and how has it changed?'

For this topic, we will be great geographers/historians, as we will learn about the past of our local area; developing an awareness of common words and phrases relating to the passing of time and changes within living memory.  We will use aerial photographs and plan perspectives to recognise landmarks and basic human and physical features, as well as devise a simple map, and use and construct basic symbols in a key. We will use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of our school and its grounds and the key human and physical features of our surrounding environment. Of course, we will also use basic geographical vocabulary.

Alongside this, our children will be amazing artists in our unit of learning about ‘Landscape art’, wherein we will learn to appreciate and create landscape art, as well as name a famous artist from the past and explain why they are famous! We can't wait for the learning to begin!

In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the stories of ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ Owl Babies’ by Julia Donaldson, ‘Peace at last’ by Jill Murphy and ‘One Snowy Night’ by Christina Butler.  The children will be creating a class story map for each story and using it to retell the story, and later innovate (change a component of) it, including lots of super story language! They will be writing sentences based on their story, ensuring they include their ‘Just Do It rules’ (being capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, Fred talk to spell) and ensuring they read and check that their work makes sense! We will also be learning how to plan for our writing; breaking each story up into a beginning, middle and end.

We can't wait to see what the children achieve!

Our ESB poem for this half-term is ‘Around London’. Do please practice reciting this at home with your child:

As always, we will be working hard on our phonics.

Phonics screen information

In June, all Year One children across the country will sit their National Phonics Screen. To find out more about what's involved, click here to watch a short video:

In Maths, our clever Mathematicians are learning all about:

Addition and subtraction within 10, 2D and 3D shapes and numbers to 20.

You can support your child at home by developing their understanding of numbers to 10 and 20; counting up to that number, finding one more/less than numbers to 10 then 20, recognising and writing the numbers – ensuring numbers are formed correctly – and being able to order numbers correctly. When adding and subtracting within 10, can your child write the corresponding number sentence?

You can further support your child using some great online games. Check out:

At school, we offer children a range of strategies to choose from when calculating: concrete (using counters or physical items to count/subtract with), pictorial (drawing dots then adding more/taking some away by crossing them out), or abstract (using a number line and counting forwards/backwards along it, ensuring one jump per number counted).

Don't forget to log into your child's TT Rockstars account to practise their times tables too! We will be setting weekly challenges on their homework profile on Class Dojo and will be competing to see who achieves the best score. Please visit:

Autumn Term 2

For the Autumn 2 half-term we will be enjoying the topic ‘What do we Know About the Victorians and the Way They Lived?’

For this topic, we will be super historians. We will learn about Queen Victoria and her reign and will find out a little about her life and why she was one of the most important monarchs.

In Design and Technology, we will understand and explore the word ‘stability’, exploring the features of structures and the stability of different shapes. We will also design our own structure and assemble our own structure so that it is stable enough to make a ‘chair’. Once complete, we will use our design criteria and our finished product to test and evaluate our structures. We will evaluate its strength, stiffness and stability.

In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the stories of Disney’s ‘Peter Pan’ and ‘The Christmas Story’ by Sarah Davies. The children will be retelling and later innovating these stories. They will also use story maps and differentiated texts to help them write these narratives. We will be learning to plan our writing, breaking it up into beginning, middle and end, as well as correctly using their just do it rules! As well as going on a journey into the world of narratives, the children will also explore non-fiction texts and write a non-chronological report about being a Victorian child. We can't wait to see what the children achieve! Click on the image below to hear the Peter Pan story:

In Maths, our clever Mathematicians are learning about money and multiplication and division. The children will learn to use methods such as grouping, sharing, drawing tens and ones and using dienes to help them. If you need any support with helping your child at home, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher via Class Dojo.

We will also be learning about digital photography in computing. The children will learn to recognise that different devices can be used to capture photographs and will gain experience capturing, editing, and improving photos. Finally, they will use this knowledge to recognise that images they see may not be real.

Alongside our school rules, we teach our children the Co-op ‘Ways of Being’. These are core values and behaviours that help to develop a positive environment for all. The 4 ‘Ways of Being’ are:

  • Do what matters most
  • Be yourself
  • Show you care
  • Succeed together

Autumn Term 2

For the Autumn 2 half-term we will be enjoying the topic ‘What Makes the Earth Angry?’

In this topic, we will be super geographers. We will locate the world’s countries using maps, and we will begin to look at key human and physical characteristics, countries and major cities. We will explore physical geography, including climate zones, rivers, mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes. We will also learn about human geography, including types of settlements and land use, economic activity including trade links and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water. To enhance our geographical learning further, we will use maps, atlases, globes and interactive resources. It will be great fun!

In Design and Technology, the children will be designing and making their own cushions. They will begin by exploring a range of existing textile products to understand how different materials, colours, and patterns are used for both function and decoration. Pupils will then generate and develop their own design ideas through sketches and discussions, selecting suitable fabrics and decorative techniques such as stitching and applique. Using basic sewing skills, they will join pieces of fabric together to create their final cushion, ensuring it meets their design criteria.

In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the key text ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ by Lynne Cherry.

The children will be retelling and later embellishing this key text. They will also use story maps and adapted texts to help them write these narratives. We will be learning to plan our writing, breaking it up into beginning, middle and end, as well as correctly using their 'just do it' rules! As well as going on a journey into the world of narratives, the children will also explore non-fiction texts and write a non-chronological report about rainforest animals. We can't wait to see what the children achieve!

In Maths, our clever Mathematicians will be continuing to develop their knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children will use concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to solve questions and challenges, using methods efficiently to solve problems. If you need any support with helping your child at home, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher via Class Dojo.

In computing, we will be learning how to create sequencing sounds using simple coding and digital music tools. They will explore how to combine and order sounds to produce short musical patterns, making links to the concept of sequencing in programming. This unit of computing requires pupils to develop their understanding and use of algorithms, create and debug simple programs, and use technology purposefully to create digital content. We will also continue to learn the importance of e-safety, focusing particularly on online bullying and online reputations.

In PE this half-term, Year 3 will take part in a range of activities designed to develop their balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility. The children will learn how to move safely and confidently across different types of apparatus, including benches, mats, and low beams. They will practise a variety of basic gymnastic shapes such as tucks, straddles, and pikes, and explore ways to travel, roll, and jump with control. As their skills progress, pupils will begin to link movements together to create short sequences, focusing on smooth transitions and good body posture. Teamwork and cooperation will also be encouraged as the class works together to set up equipment and give each other positive feedback.
