Autumn Term 1:

This term, our topic will be: ‘Who lives in my house?

During this first term we will be learning all about life in the Nursery and practising new routines to support us to become confident in the nursery environment. The children will also learn all about themselves, their friends and their families.

Gross Motor – Using ribbons and scarves for movement to develop coordination, balance, and core strength. Using colourful props encourages large, sweeping arm movements to build the shoulder and torso muscles needed for physical control and pre-writing tasks.

Physical – Completing Dough Disco and Write Dance to build the fine motor, gross motor, and neurological skills necessary for handwriting. By combining rhythm, movement, and play, these techniques strengthen children's hands and arms to improve pencil control and mark-making.

EAD – Explore a range of lines and shapes. Use a range of materials to make a self-portrait.

UTW – Discussing past and present events in the lives of children and the lives of family members. Begin to give opinions on the quality of the environment. Explore closely similarities, differences, patterns and change.

Maths – Using number rhymes to encourage counting. Children will count objects to five, learning to recognise ‘fingers up to 5’.

Communication, Language and Literacy – The children will be exploring soundpots games using shaky eggs, large scrunchie, bouncing teddys and other resources to encourage listening and attention skills.

Homework

In Dalmatians, we really value parental support with homework as it is an extension of children’s learning in school. 

Your child will also be set weekly homework online via ClassDojo. This is usually set on a Monday to be completed by the following Monday.

Summer Term 2:

For the Summer 2 term we will be enjoying the topic 'Why can’t a penguin live near the equator?

In this topic, we will be super Geographers, as we will learn to name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans, identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK and the location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator and the North and South Poles. We will also learn to use maps, atlases and globes to identify the UK and its countries, as well as the countries, continents and oceans studied in this key stage. Furthermore, we will use compass directions (North, South, East, West) and locational and directional language (e.g. near, far, left, right) to describe the location of features and routes on a map.  We are using these super videos to help us learn:

We can't wait for the whirlwind of learning!

In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the stories of ‘Lost and found’ by Oliver Jeffers, ‘Penguin Parcel’ by Victoria Cassanell and a non-fiction text about penguins. The children will be creating a class story map for each story and using it to retell the story, and later innovate it, including lots of super story language! They will be writing sentences based on their story, ensuring they include their ‘Just Do It rules’ (including capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, Fred talk to spell, and ensuring they read and check their work makes sense). Year One children will also be taught how to include appropriate adjectives (being describing words, eg 'enormous', 'scary') within their writing, and well as conjunctions (eg 'and', 'but'), exclamation marks (!) and question marks (?).  After learning to retell each story, we will spend some time innovating it; amending our story map accordingly and writing new sentences based on our innovated story. We will also be learning to plan for our writing; breaking each story up into a beginning, middle and end.

Phonics screen information

In June, all year one children across the country will sit their National Phonics Screen. To find out more about what's involved, click here to watch a short video.

In maths, our clever Mathematicians are learning all about:

Numbers to 100, Time, and Money. 

You can support your child at home by encouraging them to recognise, count to and write numbers up to 100. Can they identify how many tens and ones are in that number? For example 48 has 4 full tens and 8 ones. Support your child's learning of time by referencing it through the day. Use vocabulary such as before/after/first/next/finally/morning/evening. Finally, it would be of great benefit to your child if you could expose them to money - allow them to handle and use it. Help them to identify the different coins and notes, and to pay with money when out and about. 

You can also continue to count in 2s, 5s and 10s, as well as help to complete their 'Big Maths' multiplication quizzes, which they bring home each week. Could they group count their peas at dinner time and see how many they have if they have 5 groups of 2? Can they count them 2, 4, 6, 8, 10? etc.

Summer Term 2:

For the Summer 2 half-term we will be enjoying the topic ‘Where would you prefer to live England or Kenya?’

For this topic, we will be inquisitive geographers. We will understand geographical similarities and differences through studying the human and physical geography of a small area of the United Kingdom, and of a small area in a contrasting non-European country. We will identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United Kingdom and the location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator and the North and South Poles. To enhance our learning of geography, we will also use world maps, atlases and globes.

In Art, we will be using clay to create 3D houses. We will focus on shaping and decorating clay. We will create a pinch pot and design and make a clay tile with house features. This unit will help to emphasise children’s skills in working with clay and applying artistic techniques in a structured project.

In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the stories of ‘Hansel and Gretal’ by Antony Brown and ‘The Enormous Crocodile’ by Roald Dahl. The children will be retelling and later innovating these stories. They will also use story maps and differentiated texts to help them write these narratives. We will be learning to plan our writing, breaking it up into beginning, middle and end, as well as correctly using their just do it rules! As well as going on a journey into the world of narratives, the children will also explore non-fiction texts and write a non-chronological report comparing Kenya and the United Kingdom. We will use the text ‘If You Were Me and Lived in… Kenya’ by Carole Roman to enhance our learning. We can't wait to see what the children achieve!

Autumn Term 1

For the Autumn 1 half term we will be enjoying the topic ‘What Do Rocks Tell Us About The Way The Earth Was Formed?

In this topic, we will be scientists! In Year 3, we will learn to be scientists by exploring the natural world around us. We will compare and group different kinds of rocks by looking closely at their appearance and simple physical properties, such as colour, texture and hardness. We will also learn how fossils are formed in simple terms—when plants or animals that once lived become trapped within layers of rock and are preserved over millions of years. As young scientists, we will also discover that soil is made from tiny pieces of rock mixed with organic matter, including the remains of plants and animals.

In Design and Technology, the children will be designing and making their own cushions. They will begin by exploring a range of existing textile products to understand how different materials, colours, and patterns are used for both function and decoration. Pupils will then generate and develop their own design ideas through sketches and discussions, selecting suitable fabrics and decorative techniques such as stitching and applique. Using basic sewing skills, they will join pieces of fabric together to create their final cushion, ensuring it meets their design criteria.

In Geography this term, our Year 3 children will be exploring the fascinating world of mountains. They will learn how mountains are formed, identify some of the world's most famous mountain ranges, and discover the physical features of mountain environments. Along the way, they will develop their map-reading skills and gain an understanding of how people and wildlife adapt to living in mountainous regions.

In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the key text ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ by Lynne Cherry.

The children will be retelling and later embellishing this key text. They will also use story maps and adapted texts to help them write these narratives. We will be learning to plan our writing, breaking it up into beginning, middle and end, as well as correctly using their 'just do it' rules! As well as going on a journey into the world of narratives, the children will also explore non-fiction texts and write a non-chronological report about rainforest animals. We can't wait to see what the children achieve!

In Maths, our clever Mathematicians will be learning about place value within 1000. They will also be developing their knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children will use concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to solve questions and challenges, using methods efficiently to solve problems. In computing we will be learning about computing systems and networks. Children will begin to name and identify digital devices as well as being able to recognise and understand that all devices have an ‘input – process – output’ structure which is fundamental in enabling devices to work. We will also continue to learn the importance of e-safety focusing particularly on self-image, identity and online relationships.

In PE this half-term, Year 3 will be focusing on developing their skills in football. They will learn the basic rules of the game and work on fundamental techniques such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and defending. Through a variety of fun and engaging activities, students will improve their coordination, teamwork, and spatial awareness. Emphasis will be placed on fair play, communication, and working together as part of a team. By the end of the unit, children will have a better understanding of how to play small-sided games and will have gained confidence in their football skills.

Welcome to the Year 4 class page! Let’s take a look at what the children will be learning about during Autumn 1.

Autumn Term 1:

In English, the children will be lighting the fuse on their imaginations as they dive into the magical world of The Firework-Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman. Sparks are sure to fly as they explore exciting writing opportunities, including:

Poetry: Creating explosive shape poems inspired by Giant Rocket by Wes Magee.

Fiction – Narrative: Retelling Chapter 1 with vivid description and exciting detail.

Fiction – Narrative Innovation: Designing and describing their own spectacular firework in the style of the author.

In PE, the children will leap, balance and roll their way through gymnastics, developing strength, flexibility and confidence. We’re sure they’ll flip for it!

In RE, the children will explore the question: 'What is the Trinity and why is it important for Christians?', encouraging thoughtful discussion and reflection.

To support your child at home, please encourage them to complete their weekly homework and read regularly. This year, the children will also take part in the statutory Multiplication Tables Check, so regular practice is key.
