Spring Term 1:
How can a map help?
During this topic, the children will be exploring the text ‘Martha Maps it out’ to learn all about maps. The children will be looking at what maps are and different types of maps. We will be using our own forest school area within school to learn about key features, and we will be having a go at drawing our own maps. To finish our topic, we will learn about the journey of a letter and hope to take a visit to the postbox to post a letter home and on the way look at features in our own community surrounding our school.
Some of the texts that we will be focusing on in class are:
Three Little Pigs
Jack and the Bean Stalk
We’re going on a bear hunt
Spring Term 2:
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
During this topic the children will be learning all about space. The children will use the core text ‘Inside Space’ to learn all about space. They will watch a clip of a rocket launch and discuss what a star is. The children will finish the topic by learning about the day in a life of an astronaut.
Meg on the Moon
Whatever Next
Aliens love underpants
Our ESB rhymes will be ‘Little Bo Peep’ and ESB: ‘Zoom Zoom Zoom’ We’re Going to The Moon
In maths this term the children will be learning numbers to 10, comparing numbers within 10, addition to 10, measure (length, height and weight), number bonds to 10, subtraction and exploring patterns.

Spring 1
For the Spring 1 term we will be enjoying the topic ‘Which birds and plants would Peter Rabbit find in our park?’
The children will be scientists observing the changes across the four seasons; they will observe and describe the different types of weather associated with the seasons and how the day length varies. The children will enjoy an additional unit in science, focusing on Plants; they will be identifying and naming plants and working scientifically to observe and contrast plants and their changes over time. They will name a variety of common and wild garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees. They will also identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.

In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the stories of ‘Handa’s Surprise’ by Eileen Browne, and the traditional tales of ‘The Three Billy Goat’s Gruff’ and ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.
The children will be creating a class story map for each story and using it to retell the story, and later innovate it, including lots of super story language! They will be writing sentences based on their story, ensuring they include their ‘Just Do It rules’ (including capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, Fred talk to spell, and ensuring they read and check their work makes sense). Year One children will also be taught how to include appropriate adjectives (describing words, eg 'enormous', 'scary') within their writing, and well as conjunctions (eg 'and', 'but'). After learning to retell each story, we will spend some time innovating it; i.e. amending our story map accordingly and writing new sentences based on our innovated story. We will also be learning to plan for our writing; breaking each story up into a beginning, middle and end.
We can't wait to see what the children achieve!

In Maths, our clever Mathematicians are learning all about:
Addition and subtraction within 20, Numbers to 50.
You can support your child at home by developing their understanding of numbers to 50; counting up to these numbers, finding one more/less, recognising and writing the numbers – ensuring numbers are formed correctly – and being able to order number cards correctly. Can they also identify how many tens and ones are within that number?
You can further support your child by adding and subtracting with numbers up to 20. Can your child solve the given question? Can they write the corresponding number sentence? Eg 19 – 9 = 10
At school, we offer children a range of strategies to choose from when calculating: concrete (using counters or physical items to add/subtract with), pictorial (drawing dots then adding more/taking some away by crossing them out), or abstract (using a number line and counting forwards/backwards along it, ensuring one jump per number counted).
You can further support your child using some great online games. Check out:

Spring Term 1
For the Spring 1 half-term we will be enjoying the topic ‘What is our school made of?'.
In this topic, we will be super scientists. We will distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made. We will also identify and name a variety of materials, including wood, metal, fabric, plastic and paper. We will describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials, and we will compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties.
In Design and Technology, we will learn to join fabrics together using different methods. We will also learn to sew and join fabrics using a running stitch. We will learn how to make a product more appealing using a template to create a design and add it to our own hand-stitched pouch.
We will also explore the five different food groups and what it means to have a balanced diet. We will understand which food products can be unhealthy for you and which nutrients living things need to create energy, grow and develop.
In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the stories of ‘Traction Man’ by Mini Grey and ‘Freddy’s Teddies’ by Peter Melnyczuk. The children will be retelling and later innovating these stories. They will also use story maps and differentiated texts to help them write these narratives. We will be learning to plan our writing, breaking it up into beginning, middle and end, as well as correctly using their just do it rules! As well as going on a journey into the world of narratives, the children will also explore non-fiction texts and write instructions about how to make a Traction Man. We can't wait to see what the children achieve!

Spring Term 1
For the Spring 1 half-term we will be enjoying the topic ‘What Do Rocks Tell Us About The Way The Earth Was Formed?’
In this topic, we will be scientists! In Year 3, we will learn to be scientists by exploring the natural world around us. We will compare and group different kinds of rocks by looking closely at their appearance and simple physical properties, such as colour, texture and hardness. We will also learn how fossils are formed in simple terms—when plants or animals that once lived become trapped within layers of rock and are preserved over millions of years. As young scientists, we will also discover that soil is made from tiny pieces of rock mixed with organic matter, including the remains of plants and animals.
In English, we will be learning about Alice in Wonderland (Big Cat Collins version), where we will delve into the tea party scene and use it as inspiration to write our own narrative. We will also be learning how to write a clear and creative set of instructions for making a tea party treat. In addition, we will explore poetry by studying A Matter of Taste by Eve Merriman, thinking about its language, rhythm and meaning.

We can’t wait to see the children’s amazing work!
In maths, we are learning all about money and statistics. We explore how to recognise and use different coins and notes, work out totals and change, and solve real-life money problems. We are also developing our understanding of statistics by collecting information, organising it into charts and tables, and interpreting what the data shows. This helps us build important everyday maths skills in a fun and practical way.
In D&T, we are exploring exciting hands-on projects through Kapow. We are learning about mechanical systems by creating our own pneumatic toys, discovering how air pressure can make parts move in fun and imaginative ways. We are also developing our understanding of structures, investigating how different materials and designs can make models strong, stable and effective. These projects help us build creativity, problem-solving skills and confidence in designing and making.
In Computing, we are learning about Programming A – Sequencing Sounds. We are exploring how to create simple programs by choosing, ordering and controlling different sounds. As we build our sequences, we learn how instructions work together to make a complete piece of code. This helps us develop our computational thinking while having fun experimenting with music and technology.
In P.E., we will be using Matilda by Roald Dahl as a stimulus. The children will practise and rehearse a performance, developing the use of clear facial expressions to show character and emotion. They will also incorporate and perform confidently with a prop to enhance their storytelling.
